bookworm

Brandon loves to read, I mean LOVES to read! When he gets in trouble at school and is grounded it’s not toys or television that he is grounded from, it’s books! And that just devastates him. The latest reading level test that the teacher performed said that he, as first grader, reads at a latter third grade level! We are really proud of him!

So once he started first grade the students were to keep track of books read and once they read 100, they could prop their feet on the principal’s desk (that was a HUGE goal for him!) Well school started August 20 and he had read 100 books by September 24! I was so proud of him and he was the first student to reach the goal of 100!!

Here he is with his feet propped on the principal’s desk, and believe it or not, he was so excited about getting to do that! In addition to propping up his feet, he got a free kids meal from a local Mexican restaurant (which just happens to be his favorite place to eat) as well as a “Principal’s Reading Club” dog tag chain.

As of today, he is up to 230 books and once he reaches 250 he will get to read the morning announcements over the intercom! When he reads 300 the principal treats him to lunch and at 400 he gets to throw a pie in the principal’s face at the end of the year carnival. I said to him that at his rate he would have 400 by Christmas break and 800 by the picnic! He then asked if I thought he could throw TWO pies in the principal’s face! I laughed but told him that I didn’t know, he might just need to keep reading and see but there are no guarantees about that.

As proud as Ryan and I are with how well he reads I wish he would apply that same excitement for other subjects. He thinks since he is such a good reader that he doesn’t have to worry about math, science and social studies. It will come though.

That is awesome that Brandon loves to read! So funny that you have to ground him from books... that's what my parents did as well, but I always hid a book under the covers of my bed and read anyway. So rebellious! Ha!
